(The science behind Mirror Affirmations)
‘I could never do that,’
‘I’m not all that creative,’
‘Tried that once, it didn’t work,’
‘I just don’t get tech,’
‘I don’t have a head for languages.’
I challenge anyone to tell me that they’ve never said at least one of these to themselves at some point in their life. How about you? So here’s a little test for you.
Tell me, what irrefutable evidence you have that this is true? What are the consequences of believing this?
You hate Mondays. On Sunday night you get this icky feeling in the pit of your stomach that it’s back to the grind stone tomorrow. Every time the alarm clock goes off on Monday you groan ‘Ah shit,’ before your head is off the pillow. All the way to work you’re thinking of the five day drag ahead. All because, well, Mondays suck.
These are commonly known as ‘Mistaken Beliefs’. They are ideas we’ve been brought up to believe from family, friends, peers, colleagues and are mostly based on very little or no evidence. It’s a script our brain has been taught to recite every time we are faced with the corresponding situation, regardless of the fact that no one on the planet is able to predict the future.
What if I told you that you can reprogram your brain?
That’s right, ya can. Through positive daily affirmations. Counter statements that create new neurological pathways to strengthen a new belief (in the ventromedial prefrontal cortex, don’t ya know) and weaken the old one. Those brainy people in white coats have performed scientific studies that show:
They may help us to perceive otherwise “threatening” messages with less resistance, including interventions (Logel & Cohen, 2012);
They can make us less likely to dismiss harmful health messages, responding instead with the intention to change for the better (Harris et al., 2007) and to eat more fruit and vegetables (Epton & Harris, 2008);
They have been linked positively to academic achievement by mitigating GPA decline in students who feel left out at college (Layous et al., 2017); Self-affirmation has been demonstrated to lower stress and rumination (Koole et al., 1999; Weisenfeld et al., 2001).
Okay okay! I get it, the science people say it’s true! Now tell me what to do about it!
Easy pease. As with everything, some intense personal reflection is needed to identify exactly the mistaken beliefs you have. Then, write a counter statement to this belief. And recite it, every day.
